Discovery Interviews

I conducted 10 interviews with amateur music creators, including rappers, producers, and singer-songwriters. I asked questions about what happens before, during, and after they make music. Many of the musicians shared a common pain-point: getting meaningful feedback on their music is frustratingly difficult. When they post their work Reddit and Facebook, they’re often met with silence or unhelpful responses.

Discovery Questions

Before Creating Music:

  1. Walk me through how you typically start a new track.

  2. What’s the hardest part about getting started on a new song?

  3. Do you ever feel unsure about where to begin creatively or technically? What do you do when that happens?

  4. How do you decide what type of music to make or what idea to pursue?

During the Creation Process:

  1. Talk me through your workflow while you're producing a song.

  2. At what point in the process do you usually get stuck or feel unsure?

  3. When you're unsure about a part of a track, what do you usually do?

  4. Do you ever ask others for input while working on a song? Why or why not?

After Finishing a Track:

  1. Once a track feels finished, what do you usually do next?

  2. Where do you typically share your music, and what’s that experience like?

  3. What kind of reactions do you get when you share your songs?

  4. Have you ever wanted more input or reaction than you got? What happened?

  5. What’s been your biggest challenge when it comes to growing or improving as a music creator?

Business Goals

The business goal was to build a platform that could generate sustainable revenue while delivering real value to its users. Key objectives included growing the user base, increasing retention, converting free users to paid plans, and achieving revenue targets.

The Solution

SongRate turns feedback into a shared currency. When a user uploads a track, it gets added to other users’ Feedback Queues. The more feedback a user gives, the higher their own songs rise in the Feedback Queue, leading to more feedback in return. Premium users get unlimited song uploads and can save music to their streaming library.

User Flow

I created a user flow diagram mapping the journey from uploading a track to giving feedback and reviewing analytics. This process helped me identify friction points early.

My design process was an ongoing cycle of wireframes, mockups and testing. Each round revealed new opportunities to improve clarity and enhance the user experience.

Usability Testing

My original dashboard layout (pictured below) didn’t perform well during usability testing. Users didn’t understand that the selected song in the top left quadrant was associated with the other feedback metrics on the page. To fix this, I redesigned the dashboard using a double sidebar layout. The improved clarity helped users better navigate their own feedback.

Learning Outcomes

Designing SongRate helped me understand how to balance user needs, usability, and system logic. I gained experience making design pivots based on feedback and crafting a product that felt real and build-ready. It also taught me the value of prioritization. By focusing on the features that truly mattered, I was able to create a clearer user experience and avoid over-scoping the concept.
